Mike Karapita

Coordinator of the Journalism Program, Humber College


Michael Karapita, Coordinator of the Journalism Program at Humber College in Toronto, has been a working Journalist for over 25 years.

He is a graduate of Victoria College at the University of Toronto where he studied English and Political Science. Mike went on to do his Master of Journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa.

His journalism career began at the Canadian Press after which he moved to broadcast, writing national news for CTV National News, then to the CBC where he first wrote for the National and then advanced to the position of producer and senior producer for local, national and international news. He went on to become an Executive Producer at CBC Radio. While at CBC, he helped create several shows including CBC News: Today on television, and Sounds Like Canada on CBC Radio. He was nominated for a Gemini award for his work in private television in Toronto. He continues to work part time as a senior TV editor for CBC News Network and a senior writer and corporate trainer for CBCNews.ca.

Mike’s career at Humber began in 2004 and for the last seven years he has been Coordinator of the Journalism program. In recognition of his teaching and speaking skills, he has been selected for the past four years as a mentor for new professor hires, and has also involved in a cross-college working group on student literacy issues. He also mentors graduating students at the University of Toronto, and has just joined Carleton University as a mentor for students there, as well.

In the spring of 2012 Mike was an invited guest of the Government of Bhutan, working in the remote Himalayan country with educators and government officials on applications and strategies surrounding Social Media. This past year the San Diego based The Art Project named Mike one of the top 15 notable arts professors in Toronto.
